Killing for Contracts

Reading Rick Rozoff’s article on NATO’s misadventures in Central Asia reminded me of Hans Magnus Enzensberger’s comments about modern warfare. To paraphrase, there is no point. Sure, there is plenty of plundering to get up to as global energy deposits shrink, but war for war’s sake — partly for profiteering, partly for projecting power — no longer has anything to do with national security, except in a perverted economic sense of killing for contracts.

As NATO teams up with brutal dictators throughout the CENTCOM corridor, war as a narcissistic project is bound to rile up the locals and occasionally those left out of the booty back home. And you thought the fourteenth century was chaotic?
